Why I recommend summer courses for ALL students

Typically, when you think of a school year, you might keep summer out of it, but you really should consider a summer course (or courses!) for a bunch of great reasons.
My first summer course was a government class in the summer of 2020. I had never taken a summer class before, and I wasn’t planning to do a lot that summer in the first place. I decided that it would be nice to just knock out a required, basic course, while I could since it would just be one class I was focusing on.

My Experience

Overall, my experience was good. It was a different feeling since I was pressed to learn the information and retain it much faster than a regular semester. The class had a lot of engagement and discussion because of how accelerated it was. Plus, the professor I took the course with was really cool!

Compared to a regular course

It was a much faster class than a typical fall or spring class. I had class Monday-Thursday for about two hours a day, and tests were much more frequent.

Although it sounds intimidating, it got me used to deadlines much better than a typical semester did. It was a different environment that rewards you for being a go-getter and ahead of the schedule.

I’d recommend it

I would recommend summer courses because it allows you to focus on fewer classes at a time since usually you only take one or two summer classes.

It teaches you discipline because it will leave you behind if you don’t keep up with it. It’s not difficult, but it just requires you to be on top of your work.

It feels really rewarding studying for a test and making a good grade because you can see how effective the studying was right away as opposed to studying on and off for three weeks and then taking a test.

Why summer classes are good

Smaller class sizes, more accelerated learning, and it’s pretty straightforward how the class operates. I prefer summer classes to typical semesters because of how they’re structured.

I would also recommend them because they give you flexibility on how you want your degree plan to work. You can finish up your degree on time, or even early.

It’s also really helpful staying in a class for the summer to keep your mind refreshed and ready to get back to the fall semester grind as opposed to not looking at any schoolwork for 3 months and then scrambling to put your brain back together.
