Throughout my years in school, I’ve gone through many hardships. Several negative life events caused me to feel confused and stuck in a dark place. Despite the adversity I experienced through this time, I was still searching for ways to grow. This led me to join TRIO, and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Being surrounded by peers who have also gone through the same obstacles as myself has made my educational journey worthwhile. My experiences through TRIO have given me a sense of hope and purpose, as well as helped me establish lifelong values and priorities. TRIO has changed my outlook on life.
I know what most of you are thinking: “What in the world is TRIO Student Support Services?” TRIO programs are designed to identify promising students and help them succeed in college. TRIO stands for Touching lives, Reaching out, Increasing knowledge, Opening doors. All services are offered FREE of charge to students.
Let me break it down for you guys! Here are four reasons I joined TRIO SSS, and why you should too!
1. Unlimited supplies and resources
The TRIO lab is filled with many computers, advisors, tutors and printers for the students to use. They even have scantrons and a textbook section for every class subject. And, the best part about it is that it is ALL FREE. TRIO has all of the supplies you will need to reach and complete each course you take. Also, the supplies and resources are unlimited.
2. TRIO is a family that supports each other
Let’s be honest, college isn’t a walk in the park. Times can be REALLY tough. But having such a supportive group of people who are going through the same things as yourself makes your educational journey worthwhile. At any given time of the day, you can schedule an appointment with a TRIO advisor and talk to them about whatever it is you may be going through. Mental health can be hard to maintain during college, but it isn’t impossible. TRIO advisors and members are there for you. We are a family.
3. Extra tutoring
Oh man, I cannot tell you how many times I wanted those extra tutoring hours in the library when it came to essays. I am the type of person who needs at least five days to complete an essay. But, once I joined TRIO, that time was cut in half.
TRIO is the only program at Tyler Junior College that offers their members an extra hour of tutoring. That means you have two whole hours to get help with the subject of your choice. I must say the extra hour is truly a lifesaver! Also, the TRIO lab has its very own math and English tutor. They are all so kind and very helpful.
4. Free money
Yes, you read that right! At the end of each semester, the advisors will reward the students who used the programs resources the most.
“What? So, if I use the printers, computers, speak with my advisors and go to workshops, I will get free money?”
YES! YES! YES!

Becoming successful may seem far-fetched, but through amazing programs like TRIO, the impossible is possible. Being a part of Student Support Services has been a life-changing experience that has not only reevaluated my state of mind but has also shown me that success is closer than it seems.
TRIO advisors truly care about each and every single one of their students. The program was created to help students on their journey to success. So why not join and take advantage of the free resources and rewards that are given and awarded each semester? I really think you should join!
