You’ve probably heard from other students what they are doing with their summer: going to class! If you’ve never taken a summer class, you might be wondering, are summer classes right for me?
Here are my top 5 reasons to take a summer class:
1. Efficiency.
Did you know that taking 12 hours a semester will leave you graduating from TJC in two and a half years? In order to complete an associate’s degree on time, which at TJC is generally within two years or four semesters’ time, you need to complete a total of 30 applicable credit hours per academic year.
Many students take only 12 hours during the Spring and Fall semesters in order to keep up jobs, adjust to college life, and have time for things like band or college sports. So, how are they graduating on time? The answer is simple: summer classes.
2. Timing.
Summer classes are not all-consuming. They are usually just a month-long. You can take Summer I classes, then have the rest of the summer off, or take Summer II after a month-long break. If you want a slower pace, take a Summer Long class!
3. Location.
You can be in Tyler to take in-person classes, or out of town taking online courses. Even though many online courses require testing in-person, online proctoring is available if you work with your professor. Contact your instructor right away to set this up.
4. Cost.
Students from four-year universities commonly take community college classes over the summer—and for good reason: it’s 1/3 of the cost to take a class at TJC as it is to take a class at a state college! Don’t believe me? Check out our Annual Cost Comparison and see how you can take a TJC class even if you don’t go here.
Are you already a full-time Apache? If you look at the Tuition and Fee Breakdown you can see that per hour, summer classes cost even less than Fall/Spring classes.
5. Focus.
One strategy to get through a tough class is to take it by itself during the summer, when you can focus on learning one topic.
