This semester did not go as planned, and some might even say it was the worst. COVID-19 turned the world upside down. For many, this upheaval changed your college plans. Maybe you had to drop classes, your grades suffered, or you just burned out. I personally spoke to many students who felt in crisis, “This isn’t what I signed up for” or “I just need to sit down with my tutor. She’s my lifeline.” Bottom line, your semester didn’t hit the mark. You might feel tempted to take a break or give up altogether… DON’T! You started something great and we know you can finish it! Here’s how to bounce back from an academic setback.
Step 1: Accept how you feel.
You’re disappointed, you’re frustrated, angry, sad… that’s okay. This is the first time you had to study for finals while experiencing the weight of emotions that come with a pandemic—have a little grace for yourself. Now accept the position you’re in so you can start moving forward.
Step 2: Take a look at what your actions were, and if you would take those same actions again.
We know COVID was a stressor, but evaluate how you responded. What were your strengths? What were your weaknesses? In hindsight, how would you have done things differently?
Step 3: Look beyond your current disappointment and MAKE A PLAN!
Get back on track
-
- Minimize the damage. Start by looking into getting a grade replacement for a failed class, getting back into a required class you dropped or checking in with your academic advisor to talk through your next steps.
- Rededicate yourself to your college and career plans.
Stay on track
-
- Be honest with yourself: What should you have done differently? How can you apply the lessons you learned this semester? Anticipate what kind of obstacles you could face and come up with a plan to succeed regardless.
- Use campus resources, community support and/or self-regulation strategies. Everyone could use a little help (from their friends).
Or plot a new path

Step 4: Build resiliency—people who never struggle never grow.
Is there a silver lining? Absolutely! The world turned upside down and you are still here. If you’re reading this, it means you haven’t given up on achieving your goals. That alone shows just how tough you are. Every setback you encounter makes you stronger and better equipped to tackle the next obstacle—if you’re willing to learn. Take this opportunity to get stronger and build the resiliency that will propel you across the finish line.
