Hang in There! Stick with College even when the end goal is out of sight

My sophomore year in college was ROUGH. And when I say ROUGH, I mean I almost quit entirely, but I’m so glad I didn’t.

I was required to take 12 hours to keep my scholarship, but one of my classes was kicking my butt. The tests were hard, the professor was unforgiving and I wasn’t sure I had what it took to pass the class.

At that point, my best option was to take a gap year, regroup, and try again later.

Fortunately, I had people on my side. An advisor who encouraged me to stick with it, and parents who gave me a critical piece of advice: It will never be easier to go to college than right now.

And it’s true.

There’s a temptation to think that going to college will get easier down the road. That’s false. Growing up, getting married, moving away, having children, finding a full-time job and all of the other adult responsibilities don’t make classes any easier.

The longer you wait, the harder it gets. Sometimes a gap year can turn into one, two or three years. The further away from college you get, the harder it is to come back.

So my advice to you is this: stick with it. You may feel like the end is not in sight, but it will be here before you know it. If it still feels hopeless, please reach out to one of the many resources available on campus. We want to see you succeed and graduate!
