Dear High School Class of 2021,

Your senior year is going to be one of the most exciting times of your life, so take this chance to decide what route you want to take after graduation. College planning can feel overwhelming under normal circumstances, but you are not in this alone. Whatever your destination after high school graduation, TJC can help you get there—even if you don’t know where “there” is yet!

Whether you’ve mapped out a long-term plan or you are thinking about college for the first time, TJC has resources to help you prepare for your transition from high school to college. A lot of factors go into making these big decisions, so where do you start?

Ask for help

Discuss your plans with your family, teachers and friends and ask for help and advice. Make an appointment with a school counselor to talk about your college search.

Start early

The best thing you can do to kick off your college search is to start now! Research all of the colleges you are interested in and figure out what you are looking for in schools. Start filling out admissions and scholarship applications, seek out teacher recommendations, and brainstorm essay topics. It is quick and easy to complete a TJC Admissions Application. Learn more at tjc.edu/apply.

Cover the cost

College is expensive, but it is an investment in your future! Everyone should file the FAFSA, even if you don’t think you’ll qualify for federal aid. Many high schools have financial aid events to help students and parents, so check with your counselor. Make sure you submit scholarship applications for schools you are interested in.  You should also continue researching other scholarship opportunities.

TJC has resources to help you prepare for your transition from high school to college.

Explore your options

Begin to explore major and career opportunities by utilizing TJC’s career planning assessment and occupational information at tjc.edu/careerplanning. Some students don’t have the desire to attend a four-year college, and that’s fine!  If you do not plan to enroll in a college next year, explore opportunities for professional and technical training. There’s a wealth of opportunities out there for those who want to take a different route!

Visit campus

The best way to get a feel for a college is to walk around the campus. Use this time to visit schools for a tour and to speak with admissions and financial aid staff. TJC’s 145-acre tree-filled campus is one of the most beautiful colleges in the nation. Experience campus from home through using our virtual tour or schedule a time to visit TJC for a campus tour at tjc.edu/visit.

Get connected

Onward is a College Action Plan to help you get ready for college life! Hear from students, professors and staff at TJC on topics such as admissions, career planning, choosing a major, and getting ready for college. Enroll for free at tjc.edu/onward to get monthly college planning resources.

This is your future and you’re in the driver’s seat. Stay focused on what’s important to you. You’ve worked diligently the last three years, so don’t lose your momentum! Continue to move forward with your studies and embrace each experience provided to you as you prepare to take on the world after high school.
