Sarah Sloan was a student at TJC before transferring to her senior university. She now works as a TJC admissions specialist.
Did you know that going to TJC can make you a better student at a four-year institution? It really can! Many of our alumni transfer to excellent universities and stand out in the classroom as distinguished students. Here are 5 ways going to TJC will make you a better student.
1. It’s a new experience.
Going from TJC to another school makes that new school experience very exciting! Think about it—you are walking onto a completely new campus with different buildings and classrooms. You are also meeting new professors and classmates. Even being involved on campus, you will be exposed to a whole new set of organizations and clubs to be a part of. These are major changes that can reinvigorate you to help you excel in your career.
2. You will value the cost of each course you take.
Everyone knows that going to a junior college will help you save money. In fact, TJC’s tuition is about 1/3 the cost of a public four-year institution, with a variety of more than 130 degrees and certificates offered. When you arrive at a university and begin to spend more money, you will naturally value the cost of each course you take.
3. You will be more prepared for the college schedule.
Many students go straight from high school into a four-year institution. The transition from a typical high school Monday-Friday schedule to the new college schedule of a few one-hour classes, Monday to Thursday, is very different. Being a college student gives you leeway for either more study time or time to procrastinate. You have more freedom, but you also need to learn to set and keep your own schedule. By starting out at TJC, you will have already adjusted to the new way of life college can provide; so, you’ll go in with good study habits and time-management skills already established.
4. You will be able to handle college-level classes.
Junior college classes offer a similar level of difficulty to four-year institutions. You will already be prepared for the rigor that a four-year university will bring because you will have already experienced that rigor, thanks to TJC’s smaller class settings with professors who helped you learn the proper study techniques and skills. With the strong academic foundation you’ve built during your time at TJC, you will be better able to handle the larger classes typically found in universities.
5. You can earn an additional degree.
Having both an associate and a bachelor’s degree is more impressive than only having a bachelor’s degree. The best part is that it takes the same amount of time to earn both degrees! A way to really stand out to employers is if you have different areas of study. For example: an associate degree in art and a bachelor’s degree in business.
