The Best Start Here: Getting the Most Out of New Student Orientation

You have a lot going on right now! For many students, senior year is filled with great memories and high hopes for what the future holds. Some students may be entering college after a few years off and are just as excited to begin a new phase of their lives. Regardless of where you come from, it is important that you give yourself the best opportunity to succeed and New Student Orientation is the best place to start.

At TJC, we have designed a phenomenal program geared towards setting you up for success as you make this transition into college. Below are a few tips for getting the most from your experience at New Student Orientation.

Be Prepared

Before you are able to register for New Student Orientation (NSO) you will need to take care of a few things. You need to make sure you have applied and have been admitted, you may need to take the TSI Assessment, and you will want to think about your intended major.

Having done these things before registering will actually make the experience easier and help you hit the ground running. Before you head out for orientation, make sure you have registered and reviewed the NSO checklist.

Know What You’re Looking For

Coming to NSO without a plan is like going grocery shopping without a list. You end up wasting time and money and forgetting important things. Make sure you know what you are expected to get from this experience. Take time to meet your peers, faculty, and staff members. Explore involvement opportunities. Register for classes on-site with the help of our professionals. Most importantly, come prepared with specific questions! Don’t depend on your folks being by your side for the important moments, they will be across campus having a blast and doing their own thing.

Maximize Your Time

Simply put: you will get out what you put in. Come to NSO ready to explore, learn, and interact. You only have one shot at making the most of this experience. Be the first to talk in your small group. Walk around and talk to people instead of sitting in the bleachers. Most importantly, stay off your phone – those snaps and posts will be there when you get finished.
