How to Succeed at May Term Classes

May Term is a three-week mini-term during the break between spring finals and summer classes. These courses are open to TJC students as well as students from other colleges and universities and beyond.

Here are three tips to help you succeed at May Term!

Create a (Temporarily Intense) Study Routine

Set yourself up for success by giving yourself the main thing you need to succeed in class: study time. For the three weeks of May Term, set aside certain hours in the day to focus on this class. Start by scheduling a big block of time—all morning or all afternoon—and as you become more familiar with what this class requires, you can add or take away study hours as needed.

Make a Timeline for Due Dates

Shorter class terms require you to stay focused and knowledgeable about due dates. Print a calendar for the month you have classes and write in all of the due dates from Canvas AND the syllabus. Tape up your calendar somewhere you can see it and be reminded of what’s next. Cross off assignments as you complete them. Be sure to keep your calendar up to date if any changes are made to the course schedule!

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help

Online summer courses are fast-paced; so, if you start having trouble in a class, reach out to your professor right away. Our goal is your success. Send an email, Canvas message, or call their office number and let them know that you are struggling. Ask for study tips, additional learning resources or to set up a zoom meeting to go over a difficult concept. If you need help, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Remember: free tutoring is also available!

May Term classes can be a challenge, but you’re up for it! Just three weeks of hard work will yield full credit for an entire class—and it could be just what you need to get on track for graduation! If you have any questions, reach out to our helpful advisors who are available to meet online, over the phone and in-person.
