How to Connect with Your Professor

A lot of students need help outside the classroom—whether it’s another explanation of class material, or a scholarship, job, or college recommendation letter. Professors have office hours and time set aside before and after class to help you succeed!

I know it seems far away now, but soon you will be applying for things outside of TJC: transfer colleges, scholarships, and jobs. A lot of these applications require something called a reference: people who have seen how your work and character over a period of time. If you don’t have a lot of job experience, your college professors are an excellent resource for references.

TJC’s professors love getting to know their students. Here’s how you can put yourself out there and set yourself up for success this semester and beyond!

1. Go to class

It’s pretty simple—show up. Life happens and you will miss class once-in-a-while, but make an effort to show up on time regularly and pay attention in class. Trust me, professors do notice these things. Plus: you’re gonna want those attendance points.

2. Introduce yourself

The first day of class, find a quick second before or after class to go to your professor and say hello. I like to say “Hi Professor ____, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is _____ .” This is a great time to let your professor know right off the bat if you have any concerns about the class, days you know you will be absent, or questions about the syllabus or textbook.

3. Use good email etiquette

When you come across a question or problem in class, a polite email goes a long way. Here’s an example:

Hi Professor _____,

I am having trouble finding where to submit my essay on Canvas for your class GOVT 1301-001. Can you please direct me to the right submission link?

Thanks,

Your Name

The difference between community college professors and university professors is their focus. In universities, professors are actively researching and working towards tenure (job security). At TJC, your professor’s sole focus is—you guessed it—YOU! So, take advantage of the help they offer. Follow these three tips this semester and you are set for success!
